How To Prepare Quinoa

Preparing quinoa for your dog is simple and can bring a variety of health benefits! To prepare quinoa for your pup: 

Step 1: Rinse 1 cup of uncooked quinoa in cold water to remove any dirt or debris. 

Step 2: Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, then add the rinsed quinoa and reduce heat to low; cover the pot and simmer for 15 minutes until all liquid is absorbed. 

Step 3: Remove from heat and fluff with a fork before serving. For added flavor you can always cook it in chicken or beef broth instead of water!

Quinoa and Chicken Stir Fry

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of quinoa
  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • One chicken breast 
  • Tablespoon of olive oil
  • ¼ cup frozen peas
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon oregano
  • Pinch of salt

Step 1: Start by cooking 1/2 cup of quinoa in two cups of chicken stock for 15 minutes. 

Step 2: Cut up one chicken breast into bite-sized pieces and stir-fry with a tablespoon of olive oil for 8 minutes. 

Step 3: Add cooked quinoa, 1/4 cup of frozen peas, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon of oregano, and a pinch of salt. Cook an additional 10 minutes until chicken is cooked through.

Salmon and Quinoa Bites

Ingredients: 

  • ⅔ cup cooked quinoa
  • ½ lb salmon 
  • 2 tablespoons of low fat mayonnaise

Step 1: Begin by mixing together 2/3 cup cooked quinoa with ½ lb chopped salmon and 2 tablespoons of low fat mayonnaise. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated. 

Step 2: Form into small bite size balls about the size of a ping pong ball using your hands or a small ice cream scoop. 

Step 3: Place the bites on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190C) for 18 to 20 minutes until golden brown.

Sweet Potato and Quinoa Pancakes

Ingredients: 

  • 4 sweet potatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup cooked quinoa
  • 2 tablespoons of almond meal
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • Tablespoon of butter or oil
  • Pinch of pepper 

Step 1: Mash together 4 sweet potatoes until smooth (about 3 cups mashed). 

Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix together 2 eggs, 1/2 cup cooked quinoa, 2 tablespoons almond meal, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon sea salt, 1 teaspoon thyme leaves, 2 tablespoons chopped parsley and pepper to taste. 

Step 3: Combine the mashed sweet potatoes with the egg mixture until combined, then let settle for 5 minutes to thicken slightly before making pancakes on a pan over medium heat with a tablespoon of butter or oil for each pancake.

Banana Quinoa Balls

Ingredients: 

  • 1 whole banana
  • 3 dates (pitted)
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ¼ cup cooked quinoa
  • ¼ cup almond flour
  • 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • Pinch of coconut flakes

Step 1: Begin by pureeing one banana in the food processor together with 3 dates (pitted) and mix until a smooth paste forms. Then transfer to a medium bowl. 

Step 2: Add ½ cup rolled oats, ¼ cup cooked quinoa, ¼ cup almond flour, 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder, and some coconut flakes. Make sure everything mixes evenly together.

Step 3: Form into balls with your hands or with an ice cream scoop. 

Step 4: Place on a parchment lined baking tray and bake at 350F (175C) for 25 minutes until golden brown around edges, flipping several times during the baking process if you want them extra crispy.

Ingredients: 

  • ¾ cup cooked quinoa
  • ⅓ cup all-natural peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Step 1: Start by mixing ¾ cup cooked quinoa, 1/3 cup all-natural peanut butter, and two tablespoons of honey until combined thoroughly. 

Step 2: Take small spoonfuls and form into balls with your hands or with an ice cream scoop, then place on a parchment lined baking sheet. 

Step 3: Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175C) for 15 minutes and let cool before giving to your pup!
