Why is Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets El Elemental being recalled?

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company is expanding their recall of select Dry Dog Food due to the discovery of an inadvertent production error by a supplier that resulted in potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. An investigation uncovered new information prompting the expansion, which affects two additional product lots exclusive to this specific formula.

What can happen to my dog due to elevated vitamin D levels in dog food?

Elevated levels of vitamin D in dog food can lead to vitamin D toxicity, which can cause serious health problems in dogs. Some of the potential consequences of vitamin D toxicity include:

  1. Vomiting
  2. Loss of appetite
  3. Increased thirst and urination
  4. Weight loss
  5. Stomach upset
  6. Excessive drooling
  7. Kidney failure
  8. Muscle weakness
  9. Seizures
  10. Death (in severe cases)

If you suspect that your dog has consumed dog food with elevated levels of vitamin D or is showing symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, it is important to seek veterinary care immediately. Your vet may need to perform blood tests to assess your dog’s vitamin D levels and may recommend treatment such as hospitalization, intravenous fluids, and medication to support kidney function.

What should be done with my batch of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets El Elemental?

Pet owners should take urgent action if they have purchased the product listed above: throw away any remaining food in a securely sealed container and ensure that no other animals or wildlife can access it.

Moreover, be aware of possible signs your pet may show such as weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, lack of appetite or unusual thirst and urination – consult with a vet right away if you notice these symptoms.

Where was Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets El Elemental being distributed?
